Internet vs. World Wide Web
Internet
• Connection of computer networks it is the network
World Wide Web
• Set of technologies which is a graphical interface, allows you to be on the internet and is what allows you to click on icons and such.
How internet developed:
• Department of defense was searching for a way to communicate with each other in case of a nuclear attack. So if the mail system or anything else was to do down the government officials would be able to communicate with one another.
• Advance Research Products Agency was the first
• 1969 ARPA was successfully to connect 4 computers from California to UTAH and that created ARPA Net which they were able to communicate with one another
• One of the main innovations from ARPA NET was TCP/IP: Transmission …. Protocol: This is still used today and information is broken down into smaller chunks and you are able to send smaller files. You didn’t have to know the IP address and all you would have to type in was the domain name.
Internet has grown
• 1969 first 4 computers
• 1975 there were about 100 computers
• 1984 around 1000
• 2009 around 500 million computers
In 1983 was when ARPA NET was officially known as the Internet
Things you could do before the web
• FTP: file transfer protocol; allowed you to exchange files from different computers.
• Telnet: How you can access a remote computer if you were sitting in this room for you to access a computer that was in Greenville I would use Telnet to access it.

• Was created by Tim Burners Lee
• He created html which is what allows you to access things on the internet and allows you to link from different things
• Browsers and Firefox allow you to access web documents and it interprets html and then converts it to your screen. (EX. Adobe Dreamweaver which allows you to create an html page by dragging and dropping things.)
• The address bar at the top is known as the URL:
o Uniform Resources Locator: It helps you access what you want.
o .COM are the commercial websites
o .ORG are non-profit organizations
o .EDU is any educational or education related
o .GOV is government related websites
o .NET for networking and internet sites.
• Each country has been assigned there own abbreviation so if you were to access a British site it would be whatever and .uk (ex. Ebay someone’s url maybe ebya.comuk or something like that.)
Recent developments
• Social Networking has grown a lot since 2006
• Reason it was created was to connect people together, these sites have gone farther by making friends on Facebook, you can update your status and if you have friends they know what you’re doing instead of emailing them or sending them pictures.
Do you think social networking is a fad or is it a permanent part from now on it will continue?
Some think it’s a fad but others think it’s permanent like having a cell phone once you have it you don’t want to go without it.
Social networking is most likely permanent but certain sites like MySpace and Facebook may be fads.

E-commerce:
PEAU also found that 2/3 of people that have used the internet has bought something over the internet.
E-buisness vs. Ecommerce
E-business:
• Anything that a business does that involves internet
E-commerce:
• Transfer of ownership or a product to, your selling something.
• 2007 accounted for only 3.4%
• Has expanded beyond just selling goods its not just trying to find ways to sell more it also involves digital sells and services that are being added. EX. (StubHub, EBay, and Skype are involved in e-commerce and are adding services.)
• Convenience factor: it’s a lot easier to by a song off of ITunes or go to Netflix and rent a movie off of the internet than going to Hastings and renting a movie.
M-Commerce
• Services being offered by mobile companies
• Songs, games, ringtones, etc.
• Then getting on ITunes, Amazon
• Growing slowly, Apps like Pizza Hut and McDonalds.
• A lot of reason people believe it’s going slow is because the competing standard if you want an app or something the companies have to make apps that are compatible with all different cell phones and etc.

• Invented in 2004 and was mostly for people from Harvard
• What domain name ending did you need? .edu if you didn’t have this you wouldn’t be able to get on facebook
• In 2006 it was opened up to everyone.
• October 2007 Microsoft bought a portion of facebook.
• Estimated Facebook was worth 15 billion dollars
Policy of Privacy
• Require accurate current and complete information
• Not allowed to have multiple accounts
• You must use your legal name
• Account deletion: no convenient way to delete your account. You can deactivate your account but you can’t delete anything. Facebook stores all of your information
o Facebook can delete your account themselves (such as inappropriate pictures, underage drinking, etc.)
Social adds
• What facebook can do is if you like a certain restaurant or store they can take your profile picture and your name and use it as an advertisement for the restaurant or store. If you were to say somewhere on your news feed that you liked this and it would take your picture and name and put it as an advertisement on your facebook and some of your friends.
Tagging
• If you take pictures with people you can tag them in a picture if they have a facebook.
• If you tag someone in a picture that doesn’t have a facebook then it doesn’t show up
• That is a privacy issue as well because you may not want to show a certain picture that you are tagged in.
Contact Importer
• It will go into your email address and find out all of your contact information and try and search there data base for that same email address.
• There are some concerns about what Facebook is doing with these email addresses
News Feeds
• Lack of control on what people where posting on facebook
• Now you can opt out what you want to be shown on the news feed
• In the beginning you weren’t able to choose now you can say I don’t want to see quizzes to show up or mafia wars etc.
Features
• Apps- third party developed games, gain information from you and your contacts
• Tagging- adding names to pictures
• Public search listings- To find someone on facebook you had to be a member, but now if you want to do the public search listing people can find you on yahoo and Google search.
Social networking sites
• Problems are many different people are able to access these sites
o Press, police, etc. are able to search people.
o Some people have been arrested for underage drinking because of police have seen pictures on facebook of underage drinking.

• Orkut
• A member of this site must invite you to become a member you can’t just join
• Default privacy settings are generally wide open; most everybody can see your facebook and all of your stuff if you don’t want them to. You have to go into and change it.
License Agreements
• Some people just use other companies agreements
• ITunes agreement says you are not allowed to use that as a nuclear weapon device etc.
• They probably just used the generic apple agreement and used it for all of there software, like you probably would use this agreement on the laptops and computers and it wouldn’t pertain to iTunes but it still was the agreement we signed.
Pre-texting
• Collecting information under false pretenses
• Most people that engage in this are private investigators
• What they do is act like they are the bank or certain organizations you could give your information to like your (social security number, your address, etc.)
• One guy used pre-texting to track down a woman and kill her, he called her family, work to see her hours, when she was off, etc.
Video voidarism
• Filming or photographing people in a private invasive environment
• Such as taking pictures up women’s skirts, filming women getting undressed in a dressing room, etc.
• People get away with this because they say I can take pictures where ever I want. The difficulty to link a photo to an individual. You have to actually catch them in the act.
• The pepping- tom laws only apply to certain places, such as your home, you can’t be spied on in your home but not in public.
• Washington state case- would go into a woman’s shoe store and take pictures of the workers there, the workers would fight this and say they couldn’t take pictures of them in a private work place, this was then overturned by a higher court saying they you could take pictures of workers in their work place.

Telephone
Who invented the telephone?
• Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1676
• Alisha Gray was very close to being the first but Graham Bell got his patent first.
o Long period of time telephone service was dominated by AT&T.
o Given the right to have a monopoly over the telephone service this was because government thought it would be easier for the telephone service to get started.
o 1970s move kinda changed and people began to complain about AT&T because they were making people rent their phones and etc. So the justice system filed an anti-trust suit on AT&T and in 1982 the lawsuit was settled and AT&T was required to break it’s self up into different companies.
o The long-distance service was what the justice system wanted AT&T to break up and they did the opposite kept the long-distance and got rid of the smaller local service
• Baby Bells
o All of the little small services that were created when AT&T broke up
Bell south, Southwestern bell, specific Telesis, US West, etc.
About 7 different companies
• Competition
o MCI, is now part of Verizon
o Sprint
o Were created to challenge AT&T in the long-distance market
• In 2005 SBC bought AT&T and they became AT&T themselves, they were acquiring many of the smaller bell’s in recent years once they acquired AT&T they acquired Bell South in 2006, with this they acquired Cingular and yellow pages.com
• Verizon is the reason AT&T isn’t a monopoly because they have a “BIG COMPETETOR” in Verizon

o Technology dates back to the 1920s is when they had the technology to create a cell phone
o Cell towers divide up into geographic areas and these areas are created into cells. You need many different cell towers to cover a big city.
• First Cellular System was created in 1983
• What was one reason wireless cell was adopted so quickly?
o Portability
o Not many people had wireless phones,
o Compatibility was a big part because you were able to call land lines as well as cellular phones.
o When cell phones go going it was an analog service and was voice recognized and in the 1990s you were able to have digital service.

• First generation was when you had the analog service
• Second generation was when you go the digital
• Third generation is simply the new 3g
• Sprint says they have now a 4g
• NO standard for 3g or anything it is just a technology requirement, you have to have so much BAND width, network architecture and service, are what make it up 3g

• In 1986 only about 2 million people were using cell phones
• One of the first cell phones Motorola created the Micro TAC costed about $3,000
• 1992 only 10 million people in 1996 cell phones began to grow with the telecommunications act of 1996

• By 2000 number doubled to 100 million people
• In the spring of 2009 276.6 million people subscribe to cell phones.
• Estimated that 20.2% of US households are wireless right now.
• June 2005 there was only 7.7% that were wireless

o Cable companies are offering more Triple-play packages because they can now offer phone over the internet. More options than just the land line phone.

o iPhone big part- June 29th 2007 by December that year 2.3 million iPhone were sold in 2008 6.5% of the global markets, 28% US market share.
o Big company to challenge the iPhone was Google but that didn’t happen, they created mobile operating system on the internet.
o They partnered with Android.
o Open Source Software- Can be modified by the users/companies.
o iPhone- Apple is in control of their software they don’t want people to make changes to their products that’s why they hang back at times.

o A city offers Wi-Fi access all across the city
• Big fighter is the telecommunication companies

• They believe this is unfair competition because nobody would pay for internet service and all they would need to pay for is phone service.
• Wi-Fi has a range of several hundred feet
• New technology being offered is Wi-Max
o Wi-max is supposed to be able to cover about 20 or 30 miles instead of just a couple hundred feet
o AT&T and Verizon would probably make these Wi-Max towers not your local city.
